What We Believe
As an interdenominational ministry, we have no organizational ties or obligations to other groups. Between our board of directors and our staff we represent some 10 different Protestant denominations. Senderis values and honors denominations and other church organizations, but also focuses on those things that unite all believers. Our goal is to promote the clear and central truths of the Bible in our leadership training, and also show how they apply to a particular time and place. We are most satisfied with our work when we have brought together leaders from different organizations and together explored the richness of God’s reconciling mission.
God: We believe there is only one true God who is revealed to us in the Trinity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This God is outside of creation because He is the creator, but He chooses to communicate to us and make Himself knowable.
Bible: We believe the Bible to be God’s written word and the final authority on the serious issues of life, living, and knowing God. When interpreted by its own standards and style, the Bible is clear on the topics we really need to know about.
Jesus: We believe that Jesus is God’s living revelation of Himself and that to know God we must know Jesus. Jesus is also “the firstborn among many,” meaning that He is also the model of the new redeemed, resurrected humanity. He has gone ahead of us to make the way.
Sin: We believe that the root problem of life as a human is the problem of sin and the resulting separation from God. While psychological and physical problems are real and also have many practical solutions, behind life’s problems there looms the issue of sin against God, whether general or specific to the individual.
Salvation: We believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead to take our guilt on Himself so that by our faith in Him we might be free from the guilt and the alienation that goes with sin. Not only does this free us to know God and have eternal life, but also it frees us from the power of sin to control our attitudes and behavior. If we are willing, we can live each day in victory and joy.
Holy Spirit: We believe that the Holy Spirit gives gifts and abilities, and that every man, woman or child who belongs to Jesus has equal worth in the church and has a unique contribution to make in serving God here. The Holy Spirit is God’s personal presence in our lives.
Church: We believe in the Church as the living Body of Christ on earth. All true believers, whatever their church, location, or time in history, are members of the universal Church. A local church is the building block of the Church universal, like the nuclear family is to the human race. The church (on both levels) is a necessary part of healthy spiritual life because God made us for community. The church is the active sphere of God’s reconciliation and restoration of the world.
The Future: We believe in the future return of Jesus both for judgment and salvation. At the last day, those who believe in Jesus will rise again to experience the full measure of God’s grace and His unlimited plans for our future. Specific details about how this will occur, and especially the interpretation of the book of Revelation, are important and worthy of exploration but must be discussed charitably.
Doctrine: We recognize an important distinction between essential and non-essential doctrines. Non-essential doctrines are not necessarily unimportant. However, they are not necessary to salvation or healthy Christian practice. Some disagreements on non-essentials are to be celebrated as the natural variety that makes up the Church.
